Every spring, fish migrate up the Netherlands’ Vecht River—or, rather, they attempt to migrate. The river runs right through the center of Utrecht, a large and stupidly gorgeous city lined with a maze of locks and canals. The Weerdsluis lock, in the inner city, is almost always closed in spring, which prevents any creature from getting to its destination. The fish arrive at the lock, disoriented and quite confused. They’ve literally hit a brick wall.
What to do? While the lock does have its own operator, they aren’t paid to be at the beck and call of local riparian life. To help the fish out (and to catalog local populations), the city implemented a heartwarming, genius idea: the Fish Doorbell.
