In 2016, a group of amateur aurora-chasers in Alberta started noticing a… thing in the sky. It wasn’t their beloved northern lights—it was lower, showed up later, and was nearly vertical.
After seeing the thing enough times, they needed a name for it. Chris Ratzlaff, one of those amateurs, made a fine suggestion: Steve.*
